Nuj Children’s Privacy Notice
For parents of children under 13
This notice works together with our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, which also apply. Where this notice and the Privacy Policy differ on anything involving a child under 13, this notice wins.
What we collect from your child
Only what the coaching actually requires:
- Contact and identity: first and last name, email address, date of birth, and grade, all of which you give us, not your child.
- A phone number, but only if your child later enters and verifies one themselves in the app. It’s optional. Nuj works fine on push notifications alone.
- Assessment responses: their answers to the intro assessment and the full 36-item questionnaire, and the scores we calculate from them.
- Progress data: activities completed, XP, skill levels, tier, and time spent.
- What they write: free-text reflections and the personalization answers they type inside activities.
- Their replies to our coaching texts, if SMS is turned on.
- Basic technical data: device type, app version, IP address, and crash logs.
That’s the list. We don’t ask children for their home address, their photo, their contacts, biometric identifiers, or a government-issued ID number, and we don’t collect precise location. We do receive an IP address and device time zone, which give a rough sense of region. We use those for security, for our consent log, and to send coaching texts at a sensible hour, not to work out where your child is.
We collect no payment information from anyone, ever. Nuj subscriptions are bought through the App Store or Google Play, so Apple or Google handles the money. We never see a card number.
What we will never do
These aren’t preferences. They’re commitments.
- ❌ We will never sell your child’s information. To anyone, for any price.
- ❌ We will never show your child behavioral advertising, or build an ad profile on them, or let a third-party ad network track them inside Nuj.
- ❌ We will never share their information with other companies for those companies’ own purposes.
- ❌ We will never disclose your child’s information to a third party for a purpose that isn’t necessary to run Nuj without getting your separate, verifiable consent first.
- ❌ We will never require your child to hand over more information than the activity actually needs in order to participate.
- ❌ We will never use their reflections or assessment answers to train third-party AI models.
Who does see it
Only the vendors who make the product physically work. Today that means the companies that send our email and our text messages, host our servers, run our product analytics, monitor crashes and errors, and route the links that open the app to the right place, plus Apple and Google for sign-in and app distribution. Each gets only the piece it needs, and only after it gives us written confirmation that it maintains reasonable security for children’s information. They’re contractually bound to use it solely on our instructions and never for themselves. The full list by category is in our Privacy Policy.
We’ll also disclose information if a court orders it or if someone’s safety is at risk.
Security and data retention
We maintain a written information security program covering your child’s information, built around encryption, access controls limited to staff who need the data to do their jobs, and audit logging of every consent event.
We also maintain a written data retention and deletion policy. We keep your child’s information only as long as reasonably needed for the coaching purpose it was collected for, and delete it securely once that purpose ends. We never keep it indefinitely. Here is the schedule:
Before an account exists (the intro assessment, if your child took it): 90 days, then it expires on its own.
While the account is active: we keep your child’s account details, assessment responses, scores, and progress, because that is what the coaching runs on and what lets your child see how far they have come.
If you delete the account, or withdraw consent: we purge your child’s information within 30 days, or immediately if you ask.
If you never complete consent: we delete everything we hold about your child, and the contact details you gave us, without keeping it.
Consent and audit logs: 7 years. These are the records proving we asked your permission and what we showed you when we asked. We keep them because they protect you as much as us.
How your permission works
COPPA requires verifiable parental consent before we collect anything from a child. We build ours in three steps, and all three have to happen:
- You read this notice and check the consent box at account creation.
- We email you a confirmation at the address on the parent account, describing what you just consented to and giving you a one-click way to withdraw it.
- You complete the subscription purchase through the App Store or Google Play. That transaction generates a receipt to whoever holds the platform account being charged, which is a further signal that a real person authorized this. We don’t see the payment method itself, and the platform doesn’t tell us who the cardholder is.
Your child’s account does not become active until all three steps are complete.
If you don’t consent, we don’t create the child’s account. There’s no partial version.
We log your consent with a timestamp, your IP address, your device, and the exact version of this notice you saw.
What you can do, any time
See everything. Ask us for a copy of all the personal information we hold about your child.
Delete it. Ask us to delete your child’s account and data. We’ll purge it within 30 days, or immediately if you say so.
Say stop. Tell us to keep the account but stop collecting anything further. Practically, that ends the coaching, so we’ll walk you through what changes.
Withdraw your consent entirely. That deactivates your child’s access and starts a 30-day deletion window. If you’d rather we delete immediately, just say so. Note that withdrawing consent with us doesn’t cancel your subscription, because we don’t control billing. To stop the charges, cancel the subscription in your App Store or Google Play settings as well.
Manage it yourself. Review, export, and deletion all live in your parent account settings under Privacy. You shouldn’t have to email anyone. Exports arrive as a JSON archive within 7 days. For anything the self-serve tools don’t cover, email legal@trynuj.com and we’ll respond within 45 days, usually much faster.
We will never make you jump through hoops or sit through a retention pitch to exercise any of these. Asking once is enough.
If you’re in California, your child’s information is also covered by the CCPA’s extra protections for consumers under 16 described in our Privacy Policy, on top of everything in this notice.
What your child sees, and what you see
You’ll see your child’s scores, skill levels, tier, XP, and milestones.
You won’t see the sentences they type into their reflections, or their text conversations with Nuj. That’s deliberate. Kids engage honestly with a coach when they know the coach isn’t a monitor, and the product only works if they engage honestly.
Your COPPA right to review your child’s information overrides this. If you ask to see everything, we’ll show you everything. And if you ask us to delete your child’s account, we’ll normally tell them first so it isn’t a surprise. If you ask us to delete immediately, or if telling them wouldn’t be safe or appropriate, we’ll skip that step.
A necessary note about what Nuj is
Nuj is an educational coaching product. It is not medical care, therapy, or a psychological evaluation. Our assessments are not diagnostic tools, and a Nuj score is not a diagnosis of ADHD, an executive function disorder, or anything else. If you have a health concern about your child, please talk to a qualified professional.
Changes to this notice
If we ever want to collect something new from children, or use their information in a new way, we’ll ask you again first. We won’t quietly expand the list and count your old consent.
